How does an angle valve/bibcock work?

An angle valve, also known as a bibcock, is a type of valve commonly used in plumbing systems to control the flow of water. It is typically installed at the point where a water supply line connects to a fixture, such as a faucet or toilet.
The basic design of an angle valve consists of a cylindrical body with an inlet and an outlet, both of which are connected to the water supply lines. Inside the body, there is a movable valve mechanism that regulates the flow of water.
When the valve is in the closed position, the movable mechanism blocks the flow of water from the inlet to the outlet. This prevents water from flowing through the valve. To open the valve and allow water to flow, the mechanism is turned or rotated, either manually by a handle or knob or by using a tool like a wrench. As the mechanism rotates, it moves away from the path of water flow, creating an open channel for water to pass through.
The flow rate of water can be adjusted by partially opening or closing the valve. By turning the handle or knob, the movable mechanism can be positioned at different angles relative to the flow path, thereby controlling the amount of water that can pass through the valve. This allows for fine-tuning of the flow rate to suit the desired requirements.
Angle valves are often used in situations where space is limited or where a perpendicular connection to the water supply line is necessary. Their compact design and angled outlet make them ideal for connecting to fixtures like faucets and toilets, providing a convenient and efficient solution for controlling water flow.

Are angle valves/bibcocks suitable for outdoor installations?

Yes, angle valves or bibcocks can be suitable for outdoor installations, depending on the specific application and conditions. Angle valves are commonly used in plumbing systems to control the flow of water. They are designed to connect pipes at a right angle and typically have a handle or lever to turn the valve on or off.
Bibcocks, also known as outdoor faucets or hose bibs, are a type of angle valve specifically designed for outdoor use. They usually have a threaded spout or nozzle to attach a garden hose and provide water for outdoor tasks such as watering plants, washing cars, or cleaning outdoor spaces.
When selecting angle valves or bibcocks for outdoor installations, it's important to consider the following factors:
Material: Choose valves made from durable materials that can withstand outdoor conditions. Brass or stainless steel valves are commonly used for their corrosion resistance.
Frost protection: If you live in an area with freezing temperatures, it's essential to use frost-proof bibcocks. These valves have a long stem that extends into the interior of the building, allowing water to drain out when the valve is closed. This helps prevent freezing and bursting of the pipes.
Weather resistance: Outdoor valves should be designed to withstand exposure to UV rays, rain, wind, and other weather conditions. Look for valves with weatherproof coatings or materials that can withstand outdoor elements.
Accessibility: Consider the ease of access and maintenance. Ensure that the valve is conveniently located and easily accessible for operation and repairs if needed.
Proper installation and regular maintenance are essential to ensure the longevity and functionality of outdoor angle valves or bibcocks. It's also important to follow any local building codes or regulations regarding outdoor plumbing installations.
